2 Corinthians 5:21
How did Jesus Christ view his own death?
1. He predicted it [Matthew 16:21] “From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.” – LSB
2. He taught that it had universal significance [John 12:32] “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” – LSB
3. He affirmed that it had a definite bearing on the spirit-world [John 12:31] “Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.” – LSB
4. He linked His incarnation and crucifixion together [John 12:27] “Now MY SOUL HAS BECOME DISMAYED; and what shall I say, ‘Father, SAVE ME from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.’” – LSB
5. He declared that it was vicarious and substitutionary [Matthew 26:28] “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.” – LSB
6. He died by His own volition [Matthew 27:50] “Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.” – LSB
7. He prayed that it would glorify God [John 12:28] “Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” – LSB
Christ’s Death was Substitutionary
1. He died in our place
2. He bore our sin
3. He received our punishment
