Rooted Christianity Blog
One of our church members, Justin Kuk, has an online blog that we would like to share with the church as a helpful resource. Justin explains that his blog, Rooted Christianity, “exists to equip Christians to think deeply about theology, defend their faith through rigorous apologetics, and to bear fruit through evangelism so that they would be deeply rooted in the truth of Christianity and bear fruit in their faithful witness.” Justin has recently started a new series examining how the Old Testament speaks of Jesus; click here to read his introduction to the topic.

In Matthew chapter 23, justice, mercy, and faith are truths Jesus points to as priorities from the law of Moses. Love and respect for all people are what Jesus teaches. Hypocrisy and unbearable legalistic demands by religious leaders, Jesus condemns. We are a spiritual family in following Jesus Christ. Condescension has no place here. Jesus teaches about servant leadership in relationships with others in God’s Kingdom, where we are equals as brothers and sisters.
CHC Member Spotlight
Chiquacta Hodges has been a part of our City Harbor Church family for almost 9 years. Her pastor at Destiny City Fellowship in Richmond, VA, told her about CHC after Chiquacta asked about churches in Baltimore. Chiquacta has faithfully served in many areas of our church, including Worship Ministry, Students Ministry, and as part of the Set Up and Tear Down Team. Since COVID, she has served on CHC’s Safe Place Team, which conducts research and advises Pastors Ben and Rebecca on our church’s response and practices with regards to COVID-19. Drawing on her expertise as an epidemiologist, Chiquacta has provided valuable information, explanations, and up-to-date guidelines to help the team make fact-based recommendations. Chiquacta is an avid world traveler (pre-COVID), dedicated scholar of the Bible, and a powerful singer. She lives with her cat, Jacob, who prefers to take a supervisor’s role whenever Chiquacta embarks on one of her DIY house projects.
Q: What is your job title and where do you work?
A: I am an Infection Control Epidemiologist for Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Q: What has it been like for you working as an epidemiologist during the COVID pandemic?
A: Exhausting, sometimes disheartening.
Q: What are you the most proud of?
A: Doing things that folks don’t realize someone who looks like me can do, like graduate college with honors and buy a house…I’m also quite proud of my perfectly cultivated wit and sarcasm.
Q: Out of all of your travels, what has been your favorite place to visit and why? Where do you want to travel post-COVID?
A: Probably my cruise to Nassau, Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, and Dominican Republic because that was one of the few times that I actually had people to go with and hang out with…or maybe when I went to Honduras because I got to go parasailing. I want to go eat ramen in Japan post-Covid.
Q: What is something about you that people may not know?
A: I’ve always wanted to learn how to fly a plane and one day I’m going to have money for lessons. I was going to join the Marine Corp and fly a harrier jet according to the younger me.
Q: What is your favorite Bible verse?
A: Well it depends on the day, but sometimes it’s Psalm 27:1, and other times it’s Isaiah 41:10…but really my favorite part of the Bible is when Moses asked the Lord who should he say sent him and God hit him with the “I AM THAT I AM” (KJV!) That was a dope moment.
Q: And lastly, what is your favorite restaurant in Baltimore?
A: I don’t actually eat out very often, I used to be too poor and now I’m not, but cooking my own food is a habit. I’m always available for Krispy Kreme donuts and Chick-fil-A milkshakes though…
