Enjoy God: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4

“delight in” is a verb, to take action to have joy in, being proactive in the relationship.

“There I will go to the altar of God, to God – the source of all my joy. I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God! Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again – my Savior and my God.” – Psalm 43:4-5

We need to get to know God for this to be possible. – Jeremiah 9:24
We should want to get to know God because God delights in us. – Zephaniah 3:17 Micah 7:18
“Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” – Psalm 34:8

Here’s one suggestion for how to enjoy God.
Taking time to think about who God is and what he has done for you.

Who God is:
The One True Living God has always been alive and will always be alive.
God has all the knowledge and all the power.
God cannot be compared to any rival.
God knows exactly who we are, as a human race, and what is going on here. Yet God chooses to show us faithful love and give us opportunities to take part in this love.
Psalm 65:8

What God has done
God has proven to be faithful in love.
God gives us life.
God offers us forgiveness.
God is gracious and merciful.
God provides guidance for life.

Christians have direct access to the presence of God, through the sacrifice of Jesus. John 14:6 19:9 Hebrews 10:19
When we delight ourselves in the Lord, his desires become ours.
Our hearts can be unreliable, misguided, and wrong at times. Unhealthy things can take a place in our hearts. We should want to avoid a focus on any unhealthy, immature, selfish desires of our heart. Jeremiah 17:9 Mark 7:21-22
Delight in God’s guidance: Psalm 1:2 112:1 119:16, 174 Romans 7:22

David takes action to enjoy God.
“The one thing I ask of the Lord – the thing I seek most – is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.” – Psalm 27:4
“Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.” – Colossians 3:2

Taking time to think about who God is and what he has done for you. Personally: who is God to you, what has God done for you??
God, I love you. I take joy in who you are and all that you do.

What should we do?
1. Ask God for help.
2. List what is true about who God is.
3. List what God has done.
4. Think about your lists.
5. Thank God for who God is and what God has done.
6. Share something from these lists with someone else.

Free energy –
“You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.” – Psalm 16:11
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4
When we delight ourselves in the Lord, he becomes what we desire, and he will give us that desire because he gives us himself.
There is a positive momentum in enjoying God, because God is limitless it is endlessly fulfilling.
Give time and energy to enjoying God and you will enjoy life more. You will find positive spiritual momentum in your life.
