Matthew 4:1-11
“led by the Spirit – tempted, and he fasted”
In prayer and fasting, we can all follow the example of Jesus through listening to God, following God’s guidance, and a lifestyle of wholehearted devotion.
A. Listening to God
“People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” – Matthew 4:4 and Deuteronomy 8:3
-What God is saying is more important than my next meal.
B. Following God’s Guidance
“You must not test the Lord your God.” – Matthew 4:7 and Deuteronomy 6:16
-Humility and alignment with God’s will brings strength beyond the challenge.
C. Worshiping and Serving God
“You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.” – Matthew 4:10 and Deuteronomy 6:13
-God calls us to wholehearted devotion.
What should we do?
1. Look to Jesus as an example of guiding truth.
2. Listen to God.
3. Follow God’s guidance.
4. Worship God.
5. Serve God.
“I am the way, the truth, and the life,” – John 14:6
“So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” – Hebrews 4:14-16
