We Are Learning – Acts 2:42

Apr 23, 2021

“they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching,”

These Jesus followers formed a community. They became active learners.

“All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.” – Acts 2:42-47

Devoted – to continue to do something with intense effort, despite difficulty

“to devote oneself to, to keep on, to persist in,”

Devoted – Authentic, committed, candid, complete, dedicated, determined, devoted, earnest, fervent, genuine, never-failing, passionate, real, unwavering, warm

This comes from being saved by faith through the grace we find in Jesus!

This group of people were forming community relationships around following Jesus. They had a culture of mutual submission and equality that was unique.  “We’re in this together.”

Apostle – special messenger, the immediate followers of Jesus, commissioned by Jesus

Teaching – to cause to learn, to cause to know, to provide instruction in a formal or informal setting

(this word may include a classroom, but it also includes much more, such as instruction, guidance, questions, conversation, “along with”, by living example)

The content would have been focused on what Jesus taught them.

They were learning God’s perspective (based on Scripture) from this teaching so that they could follow Jesus’ direction, experience spiritual growth, and be active in the Kingdom of God.
